It's a promise that one day the guy will propose to the girl.
Personally, I think it's idiotic. It's saying, "I promise that one day, I might think about getting married to you...if it's a full moon and the tides are low." If you're going to get engaged, just get engaged. Pussy footing around the subject is stupid.

Giving someone a promise ring is a step before giving them an engagement ring. It's promising to stay with the person until the time is right to be engaged.

In olden days couples announced their inention to marry in a promise ring ceremony in a church. If you want to see what that is, the Priest in Twelfth Night describes a Promise Ring ceremony near the end of the play. Today a promise ring is usually given to show that the couple intends to become engaged and later married and the date of the marriage or rough time of the marriage hasn't been set yet by the couple.

A promise ring is a symbol of being faithful, trustworthy, a promise to be there for you at all times, love you unconditionally, and it's the first step to the path of marriage. So don't ever give a promise ring unless you know that person is the one.

It is typically a ring for a long relationship, basically a contract without the writing that you will stay faithful, stay pure and not betray the man before he possibly proposes down the road. These rings are given as an engagement ring without the engagement part, but still like a binding contract that you vow to be with that person until a formal engagement.

I promise ring is just that- a ring that holds a promise. You wear it as a symbol. Parents give it to there daughters as a "Save yourself for Marriage" promise, or a guy might give a girl one as a "Wait for me" Promise. Kind of a pre engagement ring (think going steady pin:).

For some people they don't know if they want to get married for a while, but are still in a very serious relationship.
A promise ring means that you promise to think about it and be devoted to that person until you know what you want. Whether it's them forever in matrimony or just .... not.

A promise ring ia like a wedding ring, but with much less value. Its that girl/boy friends do.. Its a good thing, so if he gave you one, thats great!!! Tells you maybe he wants more then to be your man...

Its a good thing actually. Some people promise forever(marriage) or to be together for a real long time or even having there virgintiy to the guy. But its just a thing that majority of tha couples do.
