It's all about numbers. One or two squirrels are cute. They are fun to feed and they make you feel connected to Nature. Fifteen or twenty squirrels are vermin and make you want to throw down your bag of peanuts and run like hell. (This actually happened to a friend of mine and myself in a park. We experienced the transition you are asking about.)

Grey squirrels are already classed as vermin, but you're still not allowed to kill them. The worst thing is when they get into your loft, they can do an enormous amount of damage and can chew through electric wires causing house fires. If that happens your house is not covered by insurance as most policies will have a clause excluding damage by vermin! If you get these little perishers in your house, all you can do is get Rentakil in to trap them and take them away. They may look cute, but they're definitely NOT.

Well, I guess it's all a matter of personal opinion now isn't it. I mean, i am pretty sure that someone out there thinks mice and rats are cute, or cool, or w/e. They are vermin, whether or not people want to admit it or not, it's just that I guess a squirrels features are a lot easier to accept and cute and cuddly, compared to a sewer rats. Am I wrong? Plus, I'm pretty sure we won't see beanie baby Rat's flying of the toy store shelves anytime soon. So GOOD LUCK & I hope I answered your question.

eeerrrmmm, never, how can squirrels be vermin, they dont rip your bin bags open, they dont fly at your head whilst shopping, they dont sit at you feet while you are trying to eat,if a rat or a pigeon came into my house i would feel sick and scared,as i would feel that my house is dirty, that it had attracted vermin,if a squirrel came into my house,i'd think "oh how cute"and try to feed it.squirrels are in a different category to vermin.

Why 'rather than cute?' they are vermin, they are cute, but they are very clever at taking the food you leave for the birds. Hawks and Owls are also vermin. But it doesn't mean that humans are better than them, just different.

Grey squirrels are vermin. A country park near where I grew up used to pay a bounty on their tails!

In the UK, Grey squirrels are already classed as vermin.

Red squirrels (our native squirrels) are classed as an endangered species (because the Grey (American. I believe) are taking over their habitat).

On a side note.. My cat loves squirrels no matter what colour they are. I have tried to teach him the difference but he will not listen :(

Squirrels will always be cute. Like pigeons they will eat out of your hand, but they do not leave messy droppings all over the place.

The grey ones are killing off our red squirrels and are so classed now as vermin. I shoot them whenever I see one
