I would recommend Shaun of the Dead...funny as hell and did have some spooky moments.
But if you want serious zombie mayhem..28 Days Later or Dawn of the Dead..both versions

Some of the best zombie flicks come from Italy ( my opinion )-
Dellamorte Dellamore- Surreal, comical, romantic, tragic and magic all at once and made with a real passion and affection for the genre. Oh, and Anna Falchi is a babe.
Zombi- Lucio's Fulci- I kind of chuckle though whenever I see the scene with the shark. Gory eye scene.

Depends on what you like in a zombie movie. But if you like fast zombies, then Re-Animator or the new Dawn of the Dead.

Redemptive hero, decent dialogue, good ending.
And bloody hilarious.
