You need to make a formal request from the plan's administrator. Each plan is different. Only the administrator can tell you how long it will take.

Unless you are 60 yrs old or older, actions on the 401K are regulated by the government and handled through a different department than payroll. Payouts as a check to you prior to retirement age will result in a steep immediate cash penalty plus all of the amount will be taxable at the time it is issued. If you are not yet retirement age, you may leave it there until then or roll in over into another account (like a brokerage with IRA management accounts). Unless you are desperate for cash or terminally ill and do not expect to live to retirement, then it is recommended that you roll the account so as to avoid the serious $$ consequences of early withdrawal.
As to actual time should you opt for a check, only your pension department can tell you that.

I'm not sure if you are retiring, that I can't answer, but if not I would try to roll it over to a current 401k or an IRA because if you just get cash it in early you will pay dearly in an early withdrawl penalty and tax for the extra "income" as they call it because they don't take taxes out until you cash it. I think it adds up to about 40%.

Ask your human relations specialist. It shouln't be much longer than three to four weeks. You must make arrangements to roll it over into an IRA(Roth or traditional) or into a new 401K plan with your new employer. If you don't, there will be a significant tax penalty incurred by the IRS.
