I read the book years ago. I think the title refers to the Greasers. They are the Outsiders. They are looked down upon because they are from the wrong side of the tracks. They don't have good families or any money.

When Johnny told Ponyboy 'stay gold', I thought it meant that Ponyboy was a good kid with potential to make something of his life. Even though Pony was a Greaser, and had no family and came from the wrong side of the tracks, Johnny knew there was something special about Ponyboy. He wasn't a thug, he was a smart and decent person. He didn't want Ponyboy to lose those good qualities. He wanted him to stay gold.

The above answer is correct. Stay gold means never change and they were considered outsiders because of their economic standing. But if you really want to get the most out of this book,
rent the movie. Seriously. I read the book and then watched the movie. Not only is it a great movie, but it will help you understand the book better.

Stay Gold = Never Change
The Outsiders = They where looked down upon cause they where greasers and weren't in the major circles like the socials, hence they where outsiders
