hey Becca,
i've always wanted a pet rat they're so cute... anyways no going to the vet isn't your number one chose... there are products that you can go get for your rat but id so soon because a rat with fleas could be deadly because that are smaller animals if they lose to much blood it isn't very good for them.... but there is some products you can get for your little rat... if you go to your nearest pet store they will tell you where you can find it in your area.... well good luck :)

I work at a pet store and have 7 rats. I would go to a vet if you are concerned but there is no flea spray made for rats, you could try a product called S.O.X it may work. GOOD LUCK!!!

Rats are a very great host for fleas, recently, I took my step daughter's fancy black and white rat to the vets, knowing it wasn't going to make it through the night due to pneumonia and still spent $275.00 for an x-ray and exam and the vet told us that he just took a picture of 70,000 fleas and then advised us that rats are great host's for fleas. the other end of the spectrum, being he is my vet for all my ferrets is that ferrets don't get fleas. doesn't make sense but this vet is the main exotic vet for the Phoenix Zoo here in Arizona. Your local pet store will have a shelf full of products for fleas and you can also call your vet and ask him or her what to get to help your little friend. Good luck! :)

You can use small animal flea bath or rat shampoo just ask the staff at pet stores, they always have them.

Why do you think it has fleas? Can you see them?

Our first rat was scratching/itching a lot and it turned out that she was sensitive to the litter. We changed from the Aspen or Pine and used CareFresh.

For our 2nd rat, she's doing fine with Aspen.

I would think that the vet would be the best option.
