You shoud try running a repair installation first using the Windos CD supplied by Dell (stick the cd in the drive and restart the pc. Read teh directions on screen. DO NOT FORMAT!!!). If you do not have them contact them and get them to ship those to you (it may cost you $20-40, but it's worth it when these sort of things happen). If that works, go to the following site http://www.kaspersky.com and use the online scanner. This will scan for viruses. Also if you ahve any spy ware removers use those. If not go to http://www.download.com and get Adaware and Spybot. Install them update the deffinitions and scan. Sounds like it's all software. Last option if those don't work is to format the system.. Formating is whiping the drive COMPLETLY clean (all files WILL be lost in a clean install like this) but WILL correct ANY software issue. It's time consuming because you have to reinstall EVERYTHING.

Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete to bring up the task manager. Then click 'File' and New Task. Type in Explorer and click ok. THis might bring up the desk top. If it doesn't, consider reformatting.

Try right-clicking the background. If a menu shows up, do as follows:
Hover over the menu item that says "Arrange Icons By", and when that opens up, make sure "Show desktop icons".

My guess as to what's wrong is that explorer.exe is not running. I suggest going to microsoft help.
