The smell is only in one room of my house, the living room, which is the furthest away from the main ac/heating unit. I have floor vents and I walked to all the other rooms and there is no smell like that in any other room. There is nothing covering the floor vents and I just changed the filter a couple days ago. It is working fine, the house heats just like it should. What could be going on? Thanks!

It's not the first time I have turned on my heat, I've had it running for about a week straight now (not constantly on, I just haven't switched it back to ac in over a week)

It was actually melted plastic lol, apparently my 2 year old put one of his ball pit balls on the light bulb of the lamp next to the floor vent and it melted when I turned on the lamp! LOL!!!

often when you turn on the central heat for the first time in the fall, it smells like burning for a while and it goes away once the dust gets out of the system. I'm not sure why it's only in one room, though.

I think everyone gets that funny smell when they turn their heat on for the first time since summer. I know we did. I think it's all the dust and debris that settles in the furnace and accumulates in the air ducts.

could something have slipped in the vent in the living room? hopefully you have the kind of vents that you can pull out and look down into the air shaft to see...
