Jeff Moss was BORN in 1942, but I don't know if that will help you. He wrote many poems for children, and a few of them were turned into songs for the TV show 'Sesame Street'. I think he'd be a fun person to research.

I know this sounds cheesy, but here goes... Bob Dylan. He is a poet and a musician and he combines the talents effortlessly and to great effect.
