I mean, is it close to the original script like subtitles, or is it sometimes altered so much that it is almost a different storyline at certain points like dubbing?

Subtitles. I've seen movies that had both and the subtitles are always more detailed.

definetly subtitles... in some anime where it's dubbed the actors have to talk really fast and you dont get all the stuff! Scary!
i think that when they translate it it loses a bit of the origional meaning

Since a manga doesn't need to be edited or censored to make it "proper for the english speaking people" (like anime dubs) it is usually a direct translation.

Not exactly. There are censorships. Also they change name of characters.
