Charlton became the player-manager of Preston North End in 1973, taking United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles with him as player-coach, but his first season was not a success and he left at the end of it. However, he was awarded the CBE that year and began a casual association with the BBC for punditry on matches which continued for many years.
He then joined Wigan Athletic as a director, and was briefly caretaker manager there.
