Anne Rice is a wonderful writer. The problem with recommending her is that nearly all of her books are a part of a series! Thats a pretty big committment, and I cant recommend a book in the MIDDLE of a series! That would be just plain mean!
Her vampire books are very popular. In my opinion Blood and Gold was the best in that line... but its like the 8th book.
I also really liked her Mayfair Witches series, which is three or four books starting with The Witching Hour.
Cry to Heaven is a good one of hers that is not part of a series.
**Warning: almost all of Anne Rice's books have sexually explicit sequences, although that is not the main focus. Several of the books mention incestuous relationships and sexual contact with young teens.

All of the above are good. However, for a sample, I would read
"The Mummy or Ramses The Damned"
This is one of the few single books that she has written and it was excellent!
It's perfect for what you want. The ISBN is 0345369947
If you like it (which you will), you can then start on one of the series.
The Vampire cronicles starting with "Interview with a Vampire".
You need to start with the Vampires, as they are referenced and appear in the Mayfair Witches - which I would recommend next after you've finished the vampire cronicals.
I generally buy my books at half.com, and I try to get multiple ones from the same vendor. If you do that, then shipping for all books after the first one is only half-price.

The Vampire Lestat is excellent
I would also suggest "A Feast for all Saints" not part of the vampire books. Really really great.
Enjoy

Start with Interview with a vampire, then the vampire lestat. you'll find in one or the other of those the listing of the other books, in order. you really need to read them in order to understand everythiing that happens. My personal favorite is memnoch the devil. Puts an interesting twist on the whole heaven/hell thing.

Many may not agree with me on this, but my favorite was 'Tale of the Body Theif.' There was just a humanity in it that I found appealing... it is the fourth of the Vampire Chronicles series.
...but there's always 'The Erotic Trilogy of Sleeping Beauty'...

Blood & Gold is awesome, but very long. If you want a really good vampire one that's shorter, my favorite is Vittorio. Lestat was the best of the earlier Vampire Chronicles.
