I spend a large amount of money (appx $11,000 each month) advertising with different search engines, all which are on a cost per click basis. An agent is offering to charge is $600 per month to optimize our accounts. What exactly would he be doing that I could not do on my own? ie. changing cost per click, ad positions, etc.

What I do for clients like you is also look at the related terms you do not target. Are you also targeting the "long tail terms" or are you in the short but less specific arena? An outside opinion can be a good thing since we generally do not have the same set of pre-conceptions as your existing advertising manager. Think of this as a way to inject a fresh perspective into your advertising. Is it worth $600 for someone else to double check your focus and possibly offer a couple of new insights.

For example, I just finished previewing a promotional video for an area. The maker was convinced he had addressed all of the communities but there was nothing identifiable for one town. When he pointed to several street shots and panoramics that were from the town in question I had to point out that none of this was labelled this way. Only a local resident would know where the shots had come from. Although the overall emphasis was okay he had failed to address specific concerns that had prompted the communities to make this.

This is the value of having an outsider look at your marketing. We look at what you do just like your customers. It is a good check of your teaching effectiveness and how well you reach a new audience.

By the way, pick a company that practises discretion to look at your advertising. If a company talks openly to you about other companies, then you can expect to have your details flaunted to other people in the future. Is this what you want? Or would you rather have a company that treats each client with confidentiality? I would not do business with my bank if I knew they would tell the next 20 people all about my account.

You should insist on the same "privileged communication" status you would get from your attorney.

Good question. First, I would speak with some of their current clients to make sure these guys are legit. In addition to what you referenced above, they could help you with copy writing. If you are not already, copy testing is a great way to increase your ROI.

The other thing they should be able to offer is a dashboard that pulls together all your campaigns in one place.

So if you have time on your hands, you can do this yourself, but if you are in a highly competitive industry and need constant optimization, you may want to test them for a few months. If they can increase your ROI by $600 then it paid for itself!

I would ask for references and see if the company can do what it promises... At $600 a month they don't have to make you much to pay for the service.

But... I'm always leary of hiring a company to optimize online advertising... you know your industry best and having an outsider coming in to tinker may not understand trends or movement in your industry.

Hey,

If you are spending 11,000 per month on PPC advertising you must be making 100,000 per month in profits. I would love to review your business module. I think the individual would spend time reviewing your current campaign, and look at key words using Overture. Other than that, what more could he do. I would stick with your gut, and do it your self.
