can a squirrell even fit an apple in its mouth? or are you talking about little bits of apple. then maybe it they're small.

Sure, within reason. If you put out a lot of apple bits at one time, however, the squirrel will try to store them like he does with nuts and seeds. Of course, cut apple pieces don't keep well, and will make for very hungry squirrels come January. If you feed them apple bits, only put out a few at a time, and be sure to put out something that will keep, too, like seeds and nuts.
