We didnt' want to know what our fist baby was. so we basically told people to buy neutral colours like green, yellow etc... And no dresses, flowers etc...
The nurery was painted an off white and we hung Anne Getis art on the walls. Once we found out it was a girl we bought borders and pther accents to put up that were a little more femanin, Whinnie the pooh or zoo animals is always good for both too.
A good idea for people who don't want to just get sleepers, blankets or baby bath products is to get generic toys or even just gift certificates to stores so you can get what yo need when you know.
Don't panic just make sure they all know and it'll be ok. And if you get a pair of blue pjs and its a girl thats ok you can still use them.
Be more concerned with the people that go and buy outfits that won't fit the baby till s/he is 2. Those people piss me off. It's like gee thanks now it can sit in the closset for a year gathering dust. Besides you can always take things back and get what you need.

Enjoy it. And the surprise when you find out what your having when the doctor calls out its a .....? Is worth the wait.

Oh and for the people that say don't keep it a secrate so you can buy the cutest pink outfits etc... Don't do that. I habe 2 litttle girls, and they are just that little girls not barbie dolls. They can wear jeans and sweaters. Not saying you put dark blue sweaters with tractors on it for a girl or a pink one with a princess on it for a boy but just stay away from the notion that you have to follow the stereo type of what a little girl or boy should look like.

Buy things in white, green, and yellow. Ask for gift cards for your shower, or gender neutral things. The thing is, when you put your child in a color like white or green or yellow, you will have to deal with people in grocery stores and stuff mistaking the gender of your baby, and saying "what a cute little boy" when you really have a girl, or vice versa. You can also ask people to include gift recipts with their gifts so that you can exchange just in case. But personally, it would have driven me crazy not to know. We had sooooo much fun shopping for a little girl, and it would have been really hard for me to not buy adorable pink stuff until after she was born

We waited with both of our girls and I have to say I got 2 very nice suprises. they both had the same nursery since neither were planned and we only lived in a 2 bedroom apartment, but we painted it pastel yellow and put Winnie the Pooh wall clings up. Everything turned out very cute. congratulations on the baby.

Go neutral - creams for clothes because he /she (hopefully not it!!) will grow out of them so quickly. For the nursery, go for bold primary colours if you want a bubbly baby, or pastels if you want a calmer one.
