How do you tell different mammoths apart? This is for my brother's history project.

The size of the animal itself and the size and shape of it's tusks? Maybe the wooly is a slightly different shade.

By their physical appearence etc.Check out different species of mammoth in wikipedia.There is a list of species given in the right side of the page.

If you mean different species, one way to tell is by looking at the teeth. They're distinctive for each species.

Pretty funny. A tiger skeleton and lion skeleton look a lot alike. You can't tell by looking at the skeletons that one has a mane and the other doesn't, or that one lives in social family groups and the other is a loner hunter.

I would imagine it would be similar to elephants. I think they use a number of vaiables but the main ones are tusk size and condition and to ears. Apparently elephants (and mammoths I guess) have a lot of wear and tear on their ears. This leaves pieces missing and scars etc, which are used to identify individuals.
