I just heard an interview with Dolly Parton on Public Radio yesterday morning.

She said she was hanging around, after a show, signing autographs one time, and a BEAUTIFUL redhead, with green eyes, who reminded her of someone she knew came up for an autograph.

Dolly asked her "What's your name?" (for the autograph). The girl replied, "Jolene".

Dolly asked her if her Daddy's name was Joe, and was she named after him. The girl said, no, just Jolene.

The encounter stuck in Dolly's mind, because the girl was very striking, and did remind her of her friend. She was sitting around strumming her guitar, just singing "Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene..." trying to come up with ideas.

The song is the idea that eventually came to her...

That's what she said in the interview, anyway. It is a better story when she tells it! :-)) She never mentioned her husband.

Zen is corrrrrrrrect. Jolene is the name of a girl Dolly met. Dolly liked the name and wrote the song Jolene around the name.

The whole it was a woman Dolly's husband was messing with is urban legend. So is the red on the head then fire in the bed. That's not true either.

It tells the tale of a housewife confronting a beautiful seductress who she believes is having an affair with her husband.

It has been said that the original inspiration for "Jolene" was a red-headed bank teller whom Parton suspected her husband at the time was fantasizing about, due to his suddenly frequent trips to the bank, though Parton herself has stated on many occasions that her inspiration came from a little red-headed girl seeking an autograph after a concert who told the singer her name was "Jolene".

Jolene was someone who tried to steal Dolly Parton's husband. It is true - not joking. I've heard her talk about it many times on talk shows and before she sang the song on variety shows.
