Files are broken up into little pieces so that your computer can process them more efficiently ... when you open and close a program the pieces are saved to the first and next available space, meaning that a 1mb file could be saved over space of 100mb all in different areas ... by defraging the computer pulls all those pieces of the file and puts them in order or "in a contiguous manner' meaning that part 2 of the files is next to part 3 then part 4 etc.
By doing this your computer is able to retrieve entire files more quickly therefore improving performance

Files that are right next to each other. When you defrag the system tries to align all the files in an orderly fashion to help save space.
Hope that helps.

A file can be taken apart and stored in more than one piece, or fragment. Contiguous files are files stored in one piece, so your hard drive doesn't have to look all over the place to read them; they get read quicker that way.
