There is no law to say you can't listen to a police radio but you can be prosecuted if you act on what you have listened to. The scanners are now getting obsolete for listening to police radio as the police radios have changed over to a digital system.

NO. It is not illegal to tune in and listen to police radio transmissions. It is however, to transmit over law enforcement frequencies without the approval of the head of the agency to which the frequency is assigned. The issue that arises is that in Florida, it is unlawful to have a police scanner installed in a motor vehicle. Police scanners can be purchased many places, such as Radio shack or radio shops.

under the old wireless telegraphy act it was ileagal to listen in and then pass on what you heard to a third party recent updated legislation post office & communications act makes it clearer that it ileagal to intercept radio traffic like polic etc within UK upgraded radio systems like Tetra make in near impossible now to listen to police calls if your thinking of buying a scanner forget it they do not have the frequency range that is required.for the new systems.

You are permitted to listen to emergency services on a radio... But to take action over something that you hear broadcast is a criminal offence.. If I remember correctly its a breach of the Wirless Telegraphy Act.

I don't believe it is in the US. However certain police departments are making it more difficult for people to listen in by switching to more sophisticated equipment, in turn you will need to spend big bucks on scanners that are capable of tuning in on their equipment.

No, scanners are sold legally and you just need the right crystal to pick up the frequency you are looking for. It is difficult to pick up tactical channels, thoses are separate channels that law enforcent use for drug raids, high risk warrants, and survalence.

UK I have a scanner but can only pick up cabs and aircraft. The emergency services have different frequencies now, so you will be lucky. It is not illegal.

I don't think there is any regulations on who can and can't listen to open-air radio waves. They can be scrambled.
