The producers have said we'll see more of the "others" this year and less of the losties we've come to love. Now here's the tricky part:

I think the entire Season 3 will comprise the two weeks that Ben told Kate about at breakfast. Here's why:

Season 1 covered 42 days
Season 2 covered 23 days

The commercials for S3 said "66 days ago they crashed"
Now think about the numbers: 4-8-15-16-23-42

I think Season 3 will cover 16 days total.
Ben told Kate that the next 2 weeks would be unpleasant. So unless there's an escape, I conclude that Kate, Sawyer and Jack will be guests of Benry and company for almost the entire season.

As for why Ben cares who Kate loves, I don't think he does. I think that whatever she says will lead to a particular set of events.
