In order to become a sociologist, you'll need a PhD or a doctorate degree, which means:
A bachelor's degree, a master's and a PhD, or if you're exceptionally smart/disciplined, you can go from a bachelor's to a PhD program (this option takes about the same amount of time as the first one).
Here's generally how it works: after you get a bachelor's degree, you can begin a master's, which will involve a thesis (30-40 page independent research project), and upper level stats. Once you're finished with that (about two years if a full-time student), you can apply to a PhD program. What makes a doctor of sociology a doctor is in the PhD: some coursework is involved, however, a dissertation is written, approx 100 or more pages of a full research project, meaning that you find an area in sociology that is unexplored, and you examine it until your head explodes. As you can imagine, there are lots of soc. doctors out there, so topics are becoming increasingly obscure. Check out your school's academic databases to get an idea of what I mean.
As far as the job market for a soc doc goes, the most common fields are marketing, research, government and teaching. All I can say is, you'd better be VERY passionate about your work, because the amount of research, internships, networking, time, and money in tuition aren't going to come easy. As far as money goes, you definately won't make 90,000 as a professor, but in other areas? Absolutely.
Good luck!
