He's probably hearing some resonance in the chords that are making him happy.
When I took flute lessons, my teacher's dog would howl at certain points during duets...moreso if we were in tune. So I think it's a good sign.
The trick is to get him to howl along with you. ;)

hey my dog does that too. Pretty sure she likes it, because I'll have the door open, and she'll come right up to the amp and attempt to sing along or whatever. She particularly likes the quacking 2 and 4 positions on the strat, clean only.

It just means that your guitar is hurting his ears. You could be a great guitarist, but if he's howling, his ears are hurting.
