I need help on my essay.
Would it be example 1 or 2? Semi-colon or colon?
Example 1: My group consisted of:

Actually, both are incorrect. A colon should only be used if it is preceeded by a complete sentence. An example such as yours would not require any punctuation; rather, it would say something like, "My group consisted of Mark, Jill, and Bill."

You would use the colon if the sentence introduced the list with a complete sentence, like, "My group consisted of three people: Mark, Jill, and Bill."

The colon always shows a listing. A comma is more suited towards adjectives or nouns, etc.
