The Five: If you held a gun to my head (and I managed to remain clear-headed enough to pick):
Nick Drake - Pink Moon - Mellow, sweet, melancholy, beautiful guitar playing, all just one guy locked in a room with his acoustic guitar on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
White Stripes - Elephant - The first three songs is the best three tracks to open an album since "The Joshua Tree". It rocks so much I break into a grin just listening to it.
Radiohead - OK Computer - An album I can listen to in any mood, and get something worthwhile out of it each time.
Prince - Sign O The Times - Pure genius. Prince was the most talented artist of the eighties. Forget the freaky nineties stuff that distracts from his brilliance -- this is what Prince was all about. He wrote, sang, produced, mixed, and played every note of every instrument on the album, and I'd argue it's the most brilliant individual effort in music history. Even Brian Wilson had a co-writer for Pet Sounds.
Tom Waits - Alice - He's my favorite songwriter ever, and he uses the most interesting arrangements in music. His voice is gravel and sandpaper, but it's always perfect for his melancholy, sweet moods and oddball stories.
Ten Albums I'd Really Miss on that Desert Island that Magically Has a Working Sound System:
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Arcade Fire - Funeral
The Very Best of Cat Stevens
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony
Ella Fitzgerald sings the Cole Porter Songbook
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Radiohead - Kid A
Modest Mouse - This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary

Wow, 5 albums? I have about 1000 in my collection, and it's still growing!!! I would have a hard time picking 50! But here goes, if it was a gun to my head situation........... Pixies - Doolittle. a classic pre-grunge rock alternative rock album that they never bettered, although all the others are still great! Here Comes Your Man, Debaser, I Bleed, Wave Of Mutilation... every song is a classic. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead. It was hard to pick as all their albums are great, but this tops for 3 reasons:Bigmouth Strikes Again, The Boy With The Thorn In His Side, and There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs. This album sends shivers down my spine, it's like some weird Disney soundtrack on LSD, being played on the moon by an alien jug band! or something. A definite 3am kind of album. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In. Again, hard to choose beween this and The Boatmans Call, but the title track, Nobody's Baby Now, and Do You Love Me? clinched it. and finally.... Ok i can't make 5, because you 've got to have both a Madness and The Jam singles collection, both of which would be self-compiled! So 6 albums then.
