Has the universe always existed, in some form or another, or did the universe have a definite beginning, out of nothing.

According to the Big Band theory the universe began as a singularity, then expanded to its present size. So the universe theoretically didn't "exist" before the Big Bang.

And I hate to tell many of the people in this thread who are saying that space has always been and always will be, but physics disagrees with them.

There was a ball of all the matter in the universe. Exactly how long it existed is any ones guess as there is no evidence for a time table of it. Under Einstein and others it is assumed that there was no time before the big bang. That is time and space as we know it today did not exist until the bang.
The universe definitely did not come out of nothing. There was something. That something had a vibration in it which in turn resulted in the big bang (the hand of God if you are Jew or Christian.)

The Big Bang is currently the most widely accepted theory among scientists. According to the theory, there was nothing before the Big Bang.

As an aside, lookup the words "braine universe" in your favorite search engine as a *possible* explanation of what existed before the Big Bang.

hi dear, i think that in the case of our universe there is no beginning and it will not have any end.the basis of my saying is the very basic rule of science, that the energy can't be created and can't be destroyed, and our universe is also made up of energy and matter.from the equation E=MC2we know that the matter is equivelent to energy, over n all we can say that matter & energy shouldn't be considered as two different things. So the universe is entirely made of energy, and energy is birthless ,so with the case of universe.
But it is the question that will always stand for the mankind for ever.

Nothing happens out of nothing to explain the matter and energy out there. Therefore the big bang theory is simply rubbish. The dimension we're living in exists within the body of a higher being aka God. We're only assets of a great game called life with some very strict rules.Love him and reach eternal love and peace.

There can never be nothing because of what is outside of it. Where does (the universe) space end and whats on the other side.Likewise how can there be nothing.

Matter can not be destroyed, nor created. It has always exist and always will. The water you drink in a restaraunt?200 million years ago it could have been dinosaur urine.Same with space. It has always been here, and always will.
