each pair of points lies on a line with the given slope. find x
1. (2,4), (x,8) and the slope is -2
2. (4,3), (x,7) and the slope is 2
you don't have to answer both. use one as an example and please explain thorougly as math is not my strong point. thanks!!

I just answered another of your questions. I hope I explained it well enough for you. I'll try to do it in small steps here. You have to take one y value and subtact the other. In example 1 take 8, subtract 4. You get 4, which you will divide by the quantity x-2.

It's always the difference of the y values divided by the difference of the x values, set equal to the slope. Here goes!

(8-4)/(x-2)=-2

4/(x-2)=-2 Now multiply both sides by (x-2)

4= -2(x-2) Distribute the -2

4=-2x + 4 Subtract 4 from both sides

0=-2x
0=x

You try the other one and then check it here:

(7-3)/(x-4)=2

4/(x-4)=2
4=2(x-4)
4=2x-8
12=2x
6=x

The slope of a line is given by the equation :
m = (y1 - y2) / (x1 - x2)
where (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) are two points.

Substituting in your 2 points gives :
x1 = 2, y1 = 4, x2 = x and y2 = 8 and the slope, m = -2.

Therefore, the above equation becomes :
-2 = (4 - 8) / (2 - x)

Now multiply both sides by (2 - x) to give :
-2(2 - x) = 4 - 8 = -4
Multiply out the LHS :
-4 + 2x = -4
Add 4 to both sides :
2x = 0
Divide both sides by 2 :
x = 0

Now you should be able to do the second one.

The slope is the ratio of the total change in the y coordinate to the total change in the x coordinate. In equation form this looks like:

(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

Since we know the slope (-2 for the first question) we can solve for x by plugging the numbers:

(4-8)/(2-x)=-2
x=0

for question 1 here is the method for solving this question:
start with the equation y=mx+b
the coordinates are listed in the format (x,y)
m is the slope, b is the y-intercept (the value of y when x=o)
take the first set of coordinates and plug them into the formula as follows: 4=-2*2+b (-2 is the slope remember)
now solve for b (b=8)
now take the other coordinates and plug them in with the same slope and y-intercept 8=-2*x+8
solve for x (x=0)
now try with your other set.... good luck

slope = rise/run

so if you graph (2,4) that's 2 spaces right, and 4 spaces up.

if the slope is -2, count two up and one over, until you reach 8. then figure out how many you went up from 0, and that's x

use the formula (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) (this is the slope formula)
plug in your values and solve for x

(8-4)/x-2 = -2
4/x-2 = -2
x=0

slope of a line = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

-2 = (8-4)/(x-2)

x-2 = (8-4)/(-2)
x-2 = 4/(-2)
x-2 = -2
x = -2+2
x = 0

Slope formula:
(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

For (2,4) (x,8):

(8-4)/(0-2)
4/-2
m=-2

I hope this helps.
