Here's a tip to help you determine if you have a leak. Make sure every faucet in the house is off, make sure the toilets are filled, then go out to the meter. There should be a little red triangle shape thing. Watch it, if it's spinning you have a leak. If not, you don't. If you do have a leak, you can determine if it's under the house or nearer the street by turning off the main water shut off located somewhere around the perimeter of your house. If you turn that off, and the red thing still spins, the leak is between there and the meter. Usually though, the pipe will be straight between the meter and main shut off, so a simple dig with a shovel will locate the area. Replacing a section of pipe is easy too. Now, if you do have a leak and it's under the house, shut the water off at the meter once you make your list of supplies. You can most likely fix any leak yourself without special knowlege or tools.

Usually, the water bill you received is actually for a couple weeks back so your toilet is probably the culprit. Also, if you can look at your water meter, I would cut off all the water in the house and see if the little wheel is still turning. If it is, you have another leak some where. If not, your fixing the toilet did the treak. Good luck!

You may have to go under the house to see if there are any other leaks?
Water is gold around here (and the other side of the mountain it rains like the dickens don't get it). Maybe the new valve was to big? Try turning your water pressure down?
Good luck hope you get it fixed before the next bill comes in...

Was this the bill for the period the toilet was running? If so, it could have wasted that much water.

Other causes:

other drip / leak in house

burst pipe between meter and house

failed water meter

meter reader made a mistake

Probably have a leak somewhere else which is constantly making your water meter go and giving you the big bill or they screwed up on your bill. You may have to see if you have leak some where in your place on the make up line to your place.

Either you have another leak or the meter is broken.
Look for wet spots around your house. Otherwise, wait for the next water bill to see if the toilet repair helped.

Make sure all the water is not in use by other family members then go to the meter and see if the hand is moving. If it is then you have a leak maybe underground
