I am a guy dressing up as a Debutante for Halloween (its meant to be fun). I am going to be wearing a ball gown of some description and have my hair up. My sister has also got me some heels that are meant to go with the dress.I have worn them but walk a bit unsteadily right now. I am meant to dance in these on Saturday LOL.

How long does it take to get used to walking, moving around in high heels? Any tips for moving around in them?

1. Make sure they're the right size. I've got huge feet (for a woman) and finding high-heels for me is hard. Quite often men's feet are broader than women's ... make sure that the toe end of the shoes you're wearing is actually big enough for the breadth of your foot. This is where I have problems with my size 11-triple E. Pointy toed shoes are probably not a good idea. Try strappy sandal or open toes styles -- I find they are more forgiving, since they don't force your toes into a pre-sized form.

2. Try shoes w/ shorter heels. You most likely don't need help w/ your height. Or broader heels.

3. If I was going to a ball, I would want something that would let me dance comfortably - and I am a woman! I have a separate pair of shoes that looks nice and is okay to dance.

4. Tips: basically, remember these aren't men's shoes, and aren't sports shoes.

Take shorter steps -- this is what can make anyone look dorky in high heels. The higher the heel, the shorter the step you need to take.

Put your foot down flatter. Don't walk heel first, then roll your foot down to have it flat. Basically, pay attention to how your foot is coming to rest on the floor ... you shouldn't have your weight pushing on the heel, while the heel is still at an angle to the floor. Your heel and the heel of the shoe should come straight down.

Walk slowly. This will help your balance. And, besides, a Deb isn't in a hurry, is she? She's out to see and be seen.

Close your eyes, take a few steps forward. Focus on how your body's balance is shifting as you move from foot to foot. Adjust accordingly. You might need to lean back. Keep your head-shoulder-hips-heels in a line. The shoes will make your pelvis tilt differently, which you need to accomodate.

Good luck.

I still am not used to walking in heels, and almost 30.
Good luck!
