On March 10, 2003, during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq (which would take place on March 20), Natalie Maines (a native of Lubbock, Texas) said between songs during a concert at the Shepherd's Bush Empire theatre in London:
"Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."
TEXANS were outraged as were many of us from other states. To read more on the subject.. Wikipedia has an excellent storyline on the controversy.

Natalie Maines the lead singer said a couple of years ago that she was sorry or upset that President Bush was from Texas. She's from Texas. That made a lot of people mad at them and it's really hurt their CD sales and concert sales. They had to cancel several concerts here in the South because they just couldn't sell any tickets. Several radio stations in Houston refused to play their music. One radio station even had a bash your Dixie Chicks CD day. They lifted you up in a crane and you threw your CD the one that went the furthest got a prize.

At the beginning of the Iraq war, the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Baines, said , in a concert in the UK, that she was ashamed that the US president, Bush, came from the same state that she did, Texas. (turns out that she was right. there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. This is a "no-win" war, as Viet-Nam was.)

Natalie (the fat little Dixie Chick) said she was ashamed that Bush was from Texas (they also are from Texas). Because of their country fan base (which generally go Republican and tend to be a little war-hungry), this came off very bad for them because it alienated their fan base.
