Mingming and Shan are spending exactly $100 on 100 gallons of punch. Mingming wants cherry juice at $5 per gallon, and Shan wants apple juice at $3 per gallon. They agree to have Lemon at $0.50 per gallon to meet their budget. What recipe will be fair to Mingming and Shan?

I have the equations:

L=Lemon
C=Cherry
A=Apple

C+A+L= 100gallons.

5C+3A+o.5L=100dollars

Also, A=C because there needs to be a same amout of Apple juice as the Cherry Juice

If you say A=C that's hardly fair.... Shan should get more than Mingming since his juice doesn't cost as much.... to be fair you would have to say that A = 5/3 * C or C = 3/5 * A. It's still going to be troublesome to solve the system of equations though... your algebra teacher is a sadist!!

Add an additional equation A=C, because it has to be fair to both Mingming and Shan. With this you have three equations and can solve by substitution.

if a=c then you have only 2 variables. so it can be A+A+L=100 gallons and 5A+3A+0.5L=100dollars. Now try to solve it.
