1898 with the destruction of the U.S.S Maine by "Alleged" spanish operatives in Cuba, touching off the Spanish American war. Which the Americans handily won. Once they tasted the ambrosia of world domination, they could not relinquish it. The United States has since become the most powerful nation in the world.

Technically, we have never been "neutral". We fought a war to gain independence, and soon after fought Native Indians for land. We have always been and will always be an Imperialistic type society. However, there are instances in our past where we were considered to be "neutral" by opposing governments. Both World Wars are evidence of that because America refused to entire either one until we were provoked to do so by those the rest of Europe was at war with.

When Pearl Harbour was attacked and the US declared war on Japan. When that happened, Germany declared war on the US.
