We CAN live without an appendix...hundreds of thousands of people have them successfully removed every year. A simple theory explaining the appendix...it was probably involved in meat digestion early in our history, probably during the Neanderthal stage of development.

We have an appendix because not all of the information in the book is important enough to be in the chapters, so it is included in an appendix at the very end.
Yes, we could live without them, but sometimes the information they contain can be interesting, particularly if you have to do research.

System: Unknown
Location: Attached to the first part of your large intestine
Physical description: A narrow, muscular, worm-like pouch, usually around nine centimetres long
Function: Unknown
No known function in humans
The appendix has no known function in humans. Evidence suggests that our evolutionary ancestors used their appendixes to digest tough food like tree bark, but we don't use ours in digestion now. Some scientists believe that the appendix will disappear from the human body.

The appendix does not appear to have a specific function. It seems that the appendix is something that was once needed by our ancestors a long time ago but has lost its function as human beings evolved.

Blokes have an appendix so they can go through their share of absolute agony. Females get childbirth, so a dodgy appendix is a doddle for them, but blokes get kidney stones which I am led to believe hurts like the devil AND burst appendix just to let them know a quarter of what we females have to put up with!

Our appendix is not functional, in organisms where it is, it is used to help in the the breakdown of cellulose (it produces the enzyme cellulase) it is merely there because humans have not evolved enough yet to not have it, it was used for digestion of plants assuming we evolved from a herbivore but losts it's function somewhere along the way, give it time (a lot) and it will be gone.

One explanation [is] that the appendix is a vestigial structure with no current purpose. The appendix is thought to have descended from an organ in our distant herbivorous ancestors called the caecum.

The appendix used to be bigger and helped to digest things such as bone a long time ago when humans ate bones!!

since there is sometimes no room to put tables or extra facts, the writers typically put it in the back. Not only that, but also some of the facts and statistics are used throughout the whole book, so its more convenient to refer to the back instead of keep showing the table every chapter they need to discuss about it.
