I have always been a reliable employee, and good at my job. For the past year we have had new management who are taking full advantage of all staff, double the work load & no sign of pay rise. yes i could go sit on my butt, but i like having an active brain. if i was use to doing this then i would have plenty of reasons to use. i had used my holiday's up and needed the break. starting work at 7am lucky to finish now at 6pm. needed the timeout.

read_c..... Doubt you had read my follow on message, (Dont want to....) But i must say i have not had the time off to go & PARTY!! Ive simply been at home in need of some time out. As for them being understanding, if they were then i wouldnt feel so overworked & under paid in the first place. And as for being on any succession plan or career ladder with them, think id rather not with an employer like that. But being a good employee as i have been for the past 4yrs i wouldnt just quit or leave them in the lurch. Plus my work colleagues would no doubt have the work load placed on them. To a certain extent i wonder is it a lie or just prior knowledge of the treatment & liberties they take with their staff. Some employers try to give out false impressions of themselves. Lucky for them its the working staff that keeps the good impression on their company. Loyalty has to be offered on both sides.

I don't understand what your actual question is. But I think perhaps you are asking if it was okay that you called out sick? Of course it is! Don't feel guilty. Believe me, your new employers are not lying awake nights feeling guilty for increasing your workload or working you poor people to the bone. You get sick days to be used. We get less sick days here in the US (if you are in the US) than just about anywhere else. And we work more than most other countries. It does not leave much time to actually have a life. You called out sick or are going to call out sick, I say "Good for you!" because I have been there. I was always the model employee myself and I always worked way too hard and was never really appreicated. I find the new culture of the office these days is to suck the employees dry until they have nothing more to give and then trade them in for a new model. Employees are seen more like pieces of equipment than the human beings that we are. I really wish I were around back in the 50's when I watch the old movies or sitcoms and the boss calls in his employee and asks him how his family is and tells him to go ahead and take a few days off to relax. Those days are long gone (for the most part- I am sure there are exceptions). Anyway, if you don't go ahead and take your time outs when you need them, you will end up physically ill and then miss a whole lot more work. So, do what you have to do for you. Because in the end, you are probably the only one in your company that is truly looking out for yourself and you need to do so! Hope that helps. I know it was a rant!

The very reason I quit after 20 years at the same job-never called in sick for years and then new management comes in and when you did call in-they want to know if you are REALLY sick. That among a lot of other things. The only good thing that came out of my never calling in or barely I should say was I got a nice payout because I had all my hours still but sometimes that isn't even worth it. I know what you are going through. Some people love to make other people miserable. Good luck.

If they haven't changed the human resources department (if it applies) have a sit down with them. Maybe you can pull on of the new big wigs off to the side and explain to them your delima. If they have an understanding that we are human and not machines I'm pretty sure they can give you a valible source to why the work load has increased and when there isn't any raises going out.

Are you asking if it is okay to use your sick days or are you saying that you did and now feel guilty? Without knowing that it is hard to answer your question.
If you are maxed out with your boss, work load and number of hours worked perhaps it is time to look for a new job. Ask your self; are your moral ethics more important than the job or is the job more important to you. If moral ethics wins it's time to find a new job.

As an employer of 200 people, I say a "mental health day" can be a good thing. Don't sweat it
