Gary O is right. That's a good distance for keeping the motor in top shape, but you can run up to 6,000 miles if the motor isn't being worked too hard. Anything much over that and you are not doing the motor any favours at all. But note that if you do lots of stop-start running, or going only very short distances so the motor doesn't get to normal temp so often, then the oil should be changed after 3,000.

And change the oil filter at the same time! Always!! Otherwise it's like getting out of a bath all clean then drying yourself off with a filthy towel...

yes oil has changed but so has car engines. The 7-8000 miles from ford has to be balanced with the fact that motorcraft 5w20 which is used in most fords is a synthetic blend. I have seen many people that follow the mfg recommendations of 7000 miles and many end up replacing engines before the car hits 100k. I am in the automotive service industry and have been for 25 years, this is what I have my family and myself doing. Both of my parents run Mobil high Mileage oil supposed to last 5000 miles they are in every 3000 miles. Myself I run Mobil 1 and I change it every 5,000 miles. There are a few of us mechanics that truly care about taking good care of a car

Most people say 3,000 miles because that's what Grandpa said. But oil now days lasts about 4 times as long as it did 30 years ago. Ford says 7 or 8 thousand miles is ok if you don't do a lot of hard driving. Mobil 1 synthetic is fine after 10,000.
Of course, the people who make money from changing oil for a living will tell you 1,500 if they think you'll believe it.

OR quite possibly he means Niles, California, a small quaint little town about 20 miles south of Oakland. Not much in Niles, you may have better luck hitting 880 and going south towards San Jose, or north towards Hayward. ; ) For those who don't know, Charlie Chaplin filmed a lot of his old movies in Niles.

I assume you mean miles? without knowing make, year and model, a general rule is about every 3,000 miles.
