What's the difference between a Dual Core Processor, and a Core Duo?

Question

When looking for a new laptop, i was told by a man very much in the know to look for a Dell with a Dual Core Processor. When i went to the Dell website, all i could see was Core Duo. I did find one Dual Core, but that was quite expensive, I have e-mailed my man in the know. But haven't yet had a reply!!!

So is a Dual Core and a Core duo the same thing, or different?

(By the way, I do know what Dual Core means)

Dual core processors are processors of any brand and model type that have two logical cores within the processor itself, as though it's two processors in one. Examples would be AMD X2's or Intel Pentium D's. Core Duo is a specific model series of processors made by Intel. There is now a release of "Core 2 Duo" series by Intel which is a dual core version series of Core Duo, get it? Any dual core is better than regular Core Duo. Mostly only laptops really use Core Duo. There are a few desktops that use Core Duo, but it's not a very strong processor. The Core 2 Duo is an awesome processor and is blowing a lot of things out of the water. I'm even saying that as an AMD fanboy. It all really comes down to what you intend its use for to determine which is actually better though.

Dual Core means it has two processor cores. The Core Duo is one type of dual core processor, the Core 2 Duo is also a dual core. So basically, if you want a dual core processor, the Core Duo will work.

EDIT: Let me clarify a bit from the guy below me who doesn't seem to think I know what I am talking about. Yes the Core 2 Duo is better than Core Duo, but is also more expensive. I got the impression from your question that cost was a concern but that you wanted a dual core processor, that is why I recommended the Core Duo. If you can afford to upgrade to the Core 2 Duo, then do so it is better. As for his comparison of the two, it seemed like pretty much jibberish to me, although the Core 2 Duo will support 64 bit and Core Duo won't. However that is not really an issue, and a Core Duo will run Vista just fine.

It did not seem like the person above gave you good advice. Here is something better.

Dual Core or also Core Duo - I a single processor with two processing cores. These will be 32 bit processors.

The Core 2 Duo - is a single 64 bit dual core process. This is what you will need with windows vista, well not need but give you the best processing power.

There is Core Duo and Core 2 Duo.
The difference is 30% increase in performance for core 2 duo.
You can find a CORE DUO CENTRINO but there is no CENTRINO version of CORE 2 DUO that I know of (that is low voltage CPU for longer battery life).

They're pretty much the same thing. They are proccessors from Intel.
