You run out of things to do pretty quick, especially once you hit young adulthood.
You also get a very limited view of the rest of the country and the world.

The advantages out weigh the disadvantages. But if I have to pick one disadvantage I would say that living in a small town, everyone knows what goes on with everyone else. Living in a small town is like having a large extended family.

People know you, or of you, even if you're not entirely sure of who they are.
Small-town gossip has NOTHING on CNN when it comes to getting news out to the masses in a hurry.
If you are very different from others, you can feel MUCH more alienated or treated strangely (the small town I grew up in, though, did consider a pretty wide variety as "the norm", so you had to be WAY off to be treated oddly).
Driving 20 minutes or more to get to a movie theater with more than 3 screens, a restaraunt that does not serve food wrapped in paper or plastic, or a store that branches out from videos, hunting/fishing supplies, medicine or groceries.
You can get hurt by more people. (This is actually only something I noticed when I compared my growing-up years to my husband's in a city. Because of the "everyone knows everybody" thing, every sickness, every death, every tragedy hits home in a way it wouldn't in a bigger city. You spend 13 years going to school with the same people - sometimes more if you go to the same preschool - so if something happens to them, even if you aren't good friends, you're a part of each others' lives.)
The lights go out at 9:00 and there's a sign at the edge of town on Friday nights when there's away football games that says "Last one out - turn out the lights."
I want to point out, I went to a big school in a small town. The town had a pretty large factory that allowed us to get good property taxes, and other than that, the main industry in town WAS the school. We were a 4A (had about 800-1000 people in the high school), and went to State (and in Texas, you know, that's pretty good, cuz it's a pretty big state) in sports, band, choir, one-act play, we had a strong Academic Decathalon, etc. I guess that's rare, but it was a REALLY good school. In a small town. It covered a lot of land area.

The question is a bit one sided, but I think that the lack of opportunities would be a big one. It is far more difficult to find a tutor/teacher for topics or activities your interested in (like dance, theatre or other arts). Also, there is definitley a lack of things for young people to do. Basically people in the small town I come from drink and make babies. They get brainwashed into thinking that the world doesn't extend past the outskirts of town and get too caught up in their small town struggles to see the world beyond.

Everyone knows your business. You go and buy a porno mag and the mayor knows. Plus the shopping is dull, you have to travel far to get that new light fixture. But all in all, and I can say this because I went from living in a highly populated area to a small town, and though it took time, I learned to like the small town better.

after living in a city for a while, i see what other people would count as disadvantages, i would count as advantages. such as having no fast food, who isn't tired of fast food! i know i am. and when i did live in a small town, i always had fun going out of town for the day. you just don't have that in a city.

Kids I think start to look for trouble if there are not enough things to keep them busy,EVERYONE knows what, who, how and how much of it your doing.Schools are not as good learning wise. Not close enough to a store in case of bad weather.Fire or cops could take for ever to get to your house. That's just a taste,so I'll stop now.

You don't have as many opportunities in school. You never have anything to do because there is nothing to do. You have to drive like a hundred miles to get anywhere! (ok, so it's like 12 for me)
There's more where that came from.
