Your question is very broad, but to answer your question, a lawyer can ask just about any question he or she can think of.

Generally the questions they can ask have to be "relevant", meaning they have something to do with the case at bar. There can be a little latitude there, but usually it's limited to "what did you see, what did you hear, what did you do, what did you think, what time was it, have you ever seen him before".
For the most part they are limited to asking things in the witness' PERSONAL knowledge. Hearsay is any statement that is not made in court that is submitted as proof of what was said. You can't ask "did he say how his clothes got covered in the Victim's blood?", because the answer is hearsay. There are exceptions to that, but you don't want the full course in Evidence. The reason they are basically not allowed is because they weren't made under oath, so the answer given might not be true.
Mostly, an intelligent lawyer will resist asking a question that he doesn't already know the answer to. "Is this your signature?" and "where were you five minutes before the fire alarm went off?"

It depends on the casse and the knowledge of hte witness. The Rules of Evidence allow an attorney to ask any question that may lead to relevant evidence in a deposition, whether or not the testimony would be admissible in court. As for questioins during a trial, the Rules of Evidence allow attorneys to ask questions that would lead to relevant evidence that would be admissible under the Rules of Evidence for that particular jurisdiction.
