I think that tear thing is actually a lightening strike or something. Maybe it's for Halloween. I'm not sure if there's an option for changing colors for the avatars, but I seem to recall it. Just click on your icon & then on the link to your avatar & go from there.
I do know that I've seen many new accessories lately so they've probably upgraded and added stuff.
