"We have the technology to put him back together again" I mean Canada not The Six Million Dollar Man. The rails were put there by our first leaders to pull this country together, To express soverinty over it's great expanse, to move and motivate man and machine. We had the technology to build the s.o.t.a. "Avro Arrow" 50 years ago, we have, state of the art, fuel cell technology, "Ballard Power", we have a former snowmobile company, that builds trains and airplanes to no compare "Bombardier". Darn, we could build right through the tundra of the arctic, and give you a thrill Disney could only dream about, diamond mines, polar bears, Supermans Fortress, Santa's Workshop. In a word, no. Coast-to-coast would be absurdly expensive and not cost-effective. Ask this question 20 years hence.

OTOH, maglev runs of up to 600 miles will shortly become cost-effective, particularly if competing airports are forbidden flights to those destinations covered by the line.

A NYC-Montreal, NYC-Toronto line are sometimes spoken of, as well as an NYC-Detroit, NYC-Boston, NYC-Washington DC lines.

Way too expensive, not enough value.

Don't watch so many episodes of the Simpsons.
