According to NASA, a CME travels at 1.5 million miles per hour, which is 2000 times the speed of sound, but only about 1/500 the speed of light, which is 669,600,000 mph. Since Earth is an average of 91.5 million miles from the Sun, a CME takes 91.5 / 1.5 = 61 hours, or about two and a half days, to travel to us from the Sun, at which point it can cause spectacular aurorae.
