If you were a new romantic (UK era 1981/3) then both men and women wore make-up, lots of haircare products, and old fashioned styles (Ruff shirts/blouses, long flowing outfits like the Cavaliers etc.). If you were a townie, then Farah slacks and a plain white shirt for men, women wore 1 piece spandex bright coloured stretch dresses.
Other atrocities of fashion included Ra-Ra skirts, Puff ball skirts, leg-warmers and snoods.
I was a new romantic, and looked very gallant.

'80s Style & Fashion 101
In the world of fashion, almost everything is recycled. That hot new trend you've latched onto probably isn't new - it just found its way back to a store near you. Guess which era is makin' a huge comeback for spring and summer 2004? The tacky, wacky '80s, baby! Get ready for stripes, leg warmers, a rainbow of jelly bracelet colors and a whole lot more.
'80s Fashion Trends - Black & White and Striped All Over
Black and white is all the rage, especially stripes. Thin stripes, fat stripes, vertical and horizontal striped T-shirts and skirts are H-O-T-T. You're also going to find that a lot of clothes will be made from body-clinging fabrics like Lycra or spandex, which were super-popular in the '80s. Oh, and don't forget to leave some room in your closet for multi-colored stripes too!

Think big hair with a lot of backcombing. Also neon or large printed materials, not necessarily matching. Cute heels or high top sneakers. Shoulder pads too. The thing was it was about changing the shilouette of your body. Big shoulders, tiny waist.

Big hair, big shoulders, big belts over their big shirts. Leggings, as many different colored socks as you could fit on your leg. Big earrings. The theme of the 80's was BIG.
