It is not a parasite because it does not live off of a living organism. It is more of a predator because it kills and digests other living organisms. It lures them to their death. Another apt description would be that a pitcher plant is a carnivorous plant.

If you live near water where there are a lot of bugs, you want to be nice to that pitcher plant!!! They eat bugs. They lure them into a funnel with their odor (which is not strong to humans), and they become trapped inside the plant where they are dissolved in fluids in the bottom of the pitcher.

It is probably a protected species.
