Only iron (steel is an iron product) rusts. Aluminum does not rust. Plain and simple. However, left raw, over time a layer of white oxidation will appear on it, much like the green scale that appears on copper. Unlike rust on steel, this oxidation is not harmful to the metal and will actually help protect it. If you want to remove the oxidation, a piece of steel wool or some muratic acid will remove it. Word to the wise, muratic acid releases toxic vapors and will take paint off of anything it touches, not to mention it will eat your skin.

Junkyard is absolutely correct. Aluminum corrosion is usually superficial, seldom progressing deep into the structure as rust typically does with iron or steel. Based upon my experience with aluminum wheels, when the clear coating scratches, peals or bubbles, the superficial corrosion will appear. So, I would assume that an aluminum chin spoiler would show corrosion as quickly as an aluminum wheel. An aluminum tail spoiler, which is up off the road will take longer for corrosion to appear.

Many people confuse 'rust' with 'corrosion'. The orange or brown coating you see on unprotected steel or iron is the byproduct of the corrosion (oxidation) of iron. The byproduct of aluminum corrosion is white & powdery-looks kinda like mold. This can be easily removed, although it may leave little pits. Aluminum is also prone to a condition called intergranular corrosion; this eats deep into the metal, and is not repairable. Also if it contacts steel or another metal, you get 'galvanic' or 'dissimiliar metal' corrosion. Although aluminum is less prone to corrosion than steel. it is more difficult to repair and requires extra care & protection.
