Man, do you really want to be king over people who've just staged a major insurrection to get rid of the previous one's yoke? Sure and he did the sensible thing.

I would say yes I would have because if I had died and the other person had become king then that person may have been a terrible tyrant and having one person as the king wouldn't work.

I would have declined it due to the fact that they were trying to get away from a monarchy and establish a democratic state.

I would have accepted to become king. We would then have constitutional and hereditary monarchy, which is close to what we have now, but without the messy and costly elections.

GW was right to decline it. If I had been him I would have too. The people wanted a Government for the people, by the people - not a sovereign.
