true -- Washington had to prove a democracy could work as opposed to a monarchy. He also need to prove that America could stand independently without the support of the Europeans.

True. They were on their second form of government and Washington knew that everything they did was setting a precedent for all other administrations to follow. We were a fledgling nation desperate to prove itself, and Washington and his administration wanted to ensure it's stability.
