I own a 1965 Chevy Convertible car in great condtion. Have been wondering if anyone could help me out with the transmission issuse's? It now has a 2 speed powerglide transmission in it and I just hate it. If I would want to change it out in the near future, what is the hot setup for this old car and what and I looking to spend ? It also has the 327 small block under the hood with a 600 4 barrel carb holly on top. Runs like a top.

I had a '65 Impala Super Sport with the turbo-hydromatic three speed automatic. That car would cruise at 135 miles an hour. The best thing you can do for the 327 is add the 'vette cam from the 327 375 hp Corvette. I'd swap out the powerglide for a Turbo-hydromatic with steel bands and about a 2700 to 3000 rpm stall converter. (You could add a lot of bucks to the project with a 700R4 4 speed automatic, but the cost/performance increase compared to the turbo-hydromatic will be minimal. Check your differential gears, and bump them up to a faster ratio if you want a highway cruiser. If you're looking at racing, it's a real heavy car so it takes some tweaking to make the quarter mile with any competitive time. Mine would pull high 12's low 13's so I was happy with that (as I said it would roll down the highway at 135 without even breathing heavy). If you don't have headers, I'd recommend them, they boost horsepower without any trouble at all.

Good Luck.

something like that would be considered an antique car and people are constantly trying to restore them, so parts are a cinch to find, but since it's old and an impala, parts might cost more than you think just because not many people make them anymore. the only thing you'd have to worry about really is driving the car, carburated cars drive much differently than fuel injected cars. hills can cause the float in the carb to rise (causing the engine to think it has more fuel than needed) so it stops sending fuel and it will stall out. also, many impalas and family cars were known as "boats" because they handled like crap and they were heavy. but i would still rather a 65 chevy than a friggin prius

The 700-R4 is ok if you don't do any towing. They are weak and can't handle the load, even when beefed up.

Since modifications would be required for just about ANY trans transplant, try to find a T-400, or the later overdrive version.
They are much stronger in stock condition.

keep the motor and swap the trans with a 700r4 that is an overdrive transmission with very little if any electronics
