There is something in sperm that encourages a cervix to dilate. Not all men carry the same amount of that "something" (I think it's a hormone, but I'm not sure...) so it's not 100% effective.

Personally, I was in labor for about 26 hours, contractions five minutes apart the whole time, and was only 2 cm dilated. My husband helped me out, and within an hour I was 4 cm along, and got to 8 cm within another 4 hours. So, from my personal experience, I found it quite effective.

I wish. I was dilated to 4 and 50% and nightly sex and walking 2 miles every night for 2 weeks couldn't pry my kid out! Finally had to be induced.
