If somebody copies something from a sourse it should be put in the "Know your sourse" section to give proper credit to those who spent countless hours, months and perhaps years in gaining the education and then compiling the information into a resourse for others.
At a minumum you will need a cable ISP, if you do not want to go with a phone line ISP, both which are DSL. Then to go wireless you need a Wireless Access Point, better known to be in the form of a Router, even though you can buy a router without an access point in it.
So, a cable DSL connection, and a Router, and depending on yoru preferances a Wireless Adapter. Now, most laptops sold today come with wireless capabilities built in. You can use this for all your hotspots and for your home wireless connection, but I really advocate purchasing an adapter from the same manufacturer as the router. I have found not mixing and matching unless you have to saves a lot of dropped connections and stops problems with incompatability. Many will say you can mix and match without any problems of incompatability, however, this is simply not true, not in my experiance nor in many of my expert friends and aquantances experinaces.
If you are trying to spend as little as possible then just stick with the wireless adapter built in to your laptop. Then all you need is a cable connection and a router.
Listen, I could spend hours writing all you need to know to set up even the most basic of wireless connections. Get this book: "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking", by Mark Edward Soper. It will show you in easy to read, understand step by step instructions how to set this up and get it configured as easy as possible. It is only about 350 pages long and is super easy to understand.
It uses Linksys as the example, but most routers and adapers use simular web browser setups and steps. Just apply the instructions for which ever you decide to buy and you will be fine. To make it even easier just buy the Linksys, but don't buy it just because it is used as the example. As I said, it is easy to transfer from one router to another these instructions. Plus, the router you buyu will have instructions AND a tech department to contact if you come across any major or even minor problems. They will even walk you through the entire setup if you need them too.
Good luck and have a great day!

Before you start you will need some important information!!!
If you are already connected, go to the command line

You should see something like this:

If you don't see anything like this you will need to get from
your ISP.
After you have all this information and have all your hardware
connected similar to the basic diagram above you will need to
configure your Router.
Open broswer like Internet Explorer, Firefox or some such.
In the Address box type:
http://192.168.1.1
If you get prompted for a Username and Password type these,
ADMIN/ADMIN
We will change these later.
You should be take to the Setup window for the router. Use
all of the recommended settings below. They will help you
configure your router for safe wireless use and wired use in
your home.
Whereever you see something in angle brackets <...> you must
supply. When you create a new password use both upper/lower
case letters and numbers. Write it down, memorize it, eat the
paper you wrote it on and never share with anyone. Just kidding
but you should not take this lightly. Anyone who know this
information could make it so they could hijack your Internet
connection. This could have sever legal consequences or imbaracing
at the least.

Assuming the computer has no constructed-in WiFi (it is an older mannequin), and you've got an web reference to WiFi to be had, simply purchase a USB WiFi plug. After putting in the drivers, it'll enable you to hook up with your community.
