It sounds like you're looking for specifics here, aren't you. None of this, "it depends on..." weak sister type answers. Well I'll give you a list of what I think everyone should be schooled in, in order to make that individual a well rounded and educated person.

First of all, they should be accurate in the use of their own language (grammar) Second, they should be able to use their own language effectively and persuasively. (rhetoric). And lastly, they should be able to think critically. (logic) These three disciplines are known as the trivium. Jesuits have been pounding these subjects into high school boys heads ad nauseum all throughout history.

Now once this foundation is layed, a person should then become fluent in at least two other languages, preferably French and Latin. German could be substituted if one wished to study the hard sciences like physics or chemistry in depth.

British literature and world literature will give one tremendous insight as will the study of History. Courses in philosophy such as logic, ethics, and metaphysics will expand the mind. Indeed, the humanities in general are probably the most important venue to help a person think outside themselves.

One should also be well versed in the arts through courses in art history, classical music, and opera. It is also important that one learn all the elements of ettiquite if he or she wishes to socialise in any fashion. A good knowledge of haute cuisine, wine, and an individual fashion sense are absolutely vital.

May I also suggest a good dose of the social sciences too. Both basic macro and micro-economics are essential if one is expected to understand money. Sociol;ogy, Psychology, Geography, and Anthropology assist in getting to know man and his environment.

I don't believe one need bother versing themselves too deep in the hard sciences unless they plan on making a career out of engineering or technology. One should be adept in the use of computers in todays world, and obviously we should all have a yeoman's knowledge of nutrition, biology, physics, chemistry, geology, astronomy, and mathmatics.

Outside the class room, if one aspires to be considered well-educated they should also be well travelled. A grand tour of Europe and North America is essential. One side trip to a less developed part of the world such as Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, or the Orient will help tremendously as well.

One should become familiar with the basic rules and highlights of different sports popular throughout the world in order to hold up their end in a conversation. Take the opportunity to participate in as many games or sports as you can.

Finally, this might be considered a little old fashioned, but a stint in the military (only as an officer) will do wonders in preparing you for leadership, self-discipline as well as provide numerous opportunities for travel.

I would say the basics are English, Math and maybe Eng Lit. Coverage of a wide range of topics and generally wide reading would be useful. Remember qualifications dont always equal a high education level if the person has learnt it all by rote and fails to think for themselves!

a good gauge for being educated is when you know there are more than two sides to anything and that you are prepared to listen and understand. its not what you took up. its how you opened your mind while NOT losing yourself in the process.

You are highly educated when you have spent so much time in school that you have lost your common sense :-)
