Depends upon the individual and what learning technique works best.

Some people like to go at their own pace, so a DVD/Video might work best.
Some people need the encouragement and direct contact with a mentor/tutor/teacher to help guide them along (Independent lessons)
Some people like a classroom setting, to be able to get feedback from other students, to banter back & forth - help each other along.

It's whatever gets the best results.

either take lessons or you can just as easily get videos off of ebay that are really really good...or just get a book and teach yourself...that's best if you are not a fast learner and like to learn at your own speed

get lessons study the books on it practice a lot!
